'Security is not glamorous. It's just a well-thought-out process.'

September 11 2002

Aaron Cohen likes to tell people that he was raised in Beverly Hills but he grew up in Israel. Cohen, 26, served in Israel's undercover counter-terrorist unit in the mid-1990s and returned to the Los Angeles area to found Israeli Military Specialists, a security firm for the elite, famous and executives based on Israeli military tactics.

"On Sept. 11, I was up really early in the morning. The military makes you sleep less. I was watching TV, and I had actually seen the second plane crash into the tower, and I remember saying, 'Oh my God, it's finally happened here.' It had just been a matter of time.

When I saw people jumping out of the building because that was their best option, I was devastated. The reason why I came back to L.A. was to bring back something different, a much more sophisticated level of technology of security.

I remember L.A. was extremely panicked. The studios' security was beefed up. The airports were tight. I started fielding calls from clients from 8 a.m. assuring them that there was nothing to worry about here in L.A. because our services were based on tactics designed to deal with terror on a daily basis. I was just kind of comforting them.

I won't do security for anyone who doesn't need it. I get asked a lot what the average person can do to protect themselves, and I always tell them you have to be a mini-detective and always be alert.

But now we see the aggressive defense tapering off, which I always disagree with. If I'm doing a special event, when it's about to end is when I get aggressive. It's the soft period, because it's when people least expect it. When people start to get comfortable, I start to get uncomfortable. You've got to put yourself in the mind-set.

Private clients hired us for the Oscars here. Security is not glamorous. It's just a well-thought-out process."
